Non-profit organizations are facing very challenging times as a result of the economy. Performing arts organizations are particularly hard hit, and our Symphony is not immune. The good news is, due to initiatives undertaken over a year ago, we are controlling our expenses very well. Our Symphony has the smallest expense budget of any professional orchestra in California and both our season subscriptions and individual ticket sales are up this year.
However, as with all performing arts, ticket sales represent only 40% of the total cost of producing our performances. The remaining 60% must come from grants, sponsorships, and individual donations. Unfortunately, income from these sources was down significantly last year and again this year. Our financial well-being determines the repertoire, orchestra size and soloists we are able to present.
