Featuring a Program of Classic Beach Boys Tunes and Other Surf Rock Favorites

The legendary surf rock band, Papa Doo Run Run, returns to Santa Cruz to play a benefit concert with the Santa Cruz County Symphony on Saturday, November 14, 8pm at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Featuring a full plate of classic tunes, the concert is certain to once again delight lovers of the Surf Rock Era.
This concert offers a special opportunity to see Papa Doo Run Run up close and personal and to hear classic tunes from the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, and the Four Seasons, among others performed with live with an orchestra. “As the true Surf City, Santa Cruz can show its pride and have a great musical experience,” says John Larry Granger, Music Director of the Santa Cruz County Symphony. “We expect this to be a ‘Fun, Fun, Fun’ evening!”
Papa Doo Run Run- a Grammy-nominated band with two gold records to their name- has been entertaining its fans nationwide since 1965. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Papa Doo Run Run toured with Jan and Dean, and recorded and performed live with the Beach Boys. In 2007, Papa Doo Run Run was inducted into the Northern California Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Band leader, Don Zirillo says, “Four decades ago, we started with some guitars and drums in somebody’s mom’s station wagon… Today we have four tons of gear, a semi to haul it, and a symphony orchestra backing us up. Who knew?”
The concert benefits the Symphony and its heralded Youth & Family Program, which brings musicians and docents into elementary school classrooms throughout the county and provides free Symphony concerts to the students. This program is the often the children’s first experience of live classical music, and is a vital enrichment to schools with limited arts budgets.
